WHY THIS EXISTS

Why This

Exists

Those steps can be useful. They often leave one important question unanswered:

Why does the urge keep coming back?

Porn Is Not the Problem was created to help answer that question.

This project looks at the emotional pressure, learned patterns, and brain processes that can make porn feel necessary in the moment.

When you understand what the behavior is doing for your brain, you can begin building better ways to respond.

People are often told:

  • People struggling with porn are often told to stop.
  • Resist harder.
  • Pray more.
  • Install another blocker.
  • Confess again.
  • Try harder next time.

THE CORE BELIEF

Porn Use Can
Become a Coping Response

Recognizing those needs does not excuse harmful choices. It gives you a clearer place to begin.

You can take responsibility while also asking what happened, what you needed, and what could help next time.

It may offer temporary relief from:

  • Stress
  • Loneliness
  • Anxiety
  • Grief
  • Rejection
  • Insecurity
  • Boredom
  • Exhaustion
  • Emotional pressure
  • A need for comfort, connection, or control

OUR VALUES

What Guides

This Project

Six principles shape how we write, teach, and build recovery resources.

🧠

Brain Science Should Be Understandable

You should not need a clinical background to understand why novelty, intensity, stress, and reward affect your choices. We explain these ideas in plain language so you can recognize them in your own life.

🪜

Recovery Tools Should Be Practical

A tool only helps when you can remember and use it during a difficult moment. The Ladder Method, the Temptation Timeline, and the reflection tools are designed for real urges, real pressure, and imperfect situations.

🤝

Accountability Should Include Compassion

Honesty matters. Responsibility matters. Compassion matters too. You can face what happened without treating yourself like you are beyond help.

💛

Shame Should Never Be the Plan

Shame can increase isolation, distress, and the desire to escape. Recovery needs honesty, support, structure, patience, and useful information.

📋

Setbacks Can Teach You Something

A relapse may reveal a trigger, unmet need, weak boundary, or warning sign you did not recognize earlier. Learning from it helps you prepare for the next urge.

Progress Is Bigger Than a Streak

Progress may include catching an urge sooner, reducing escalation, asking for help earlier, recovering more quickly, or understanding your triggers more clearly. Your progress is information.

OUR STORY

The Story Behind
the Ebook

Porn Is Not the Problem began as a faith-based ebook written primarily for men in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

It brought together personal experience, brain science, spiritual reflection, and a practical urge-management framework called the Ladder Method.

The ebook was created for people who wanted to live according to their faith while also understanding why willpower, promises, and shame had failed to create lasting change.

The project has since grown into a broader mental wellness resource.

The original faith perspective remains part of its story. The tools are available to anyone who wants to understand compulsive porn use, reduce shame, and make healthier choices.

INCLUSIVE APPROACH

Faith-Friendly. Open to Everyone.

People approach recovery through different beliefs and values. For some, faith is central. For others, the focus may be mental health, relationships, personal integrity, emotional wellness, or regaining control.

Some resources may discuss:

  • God
  • Prayer
  • Repentance
  • Spiritual guidance
  • Grace
  • Faith-based accountability

Other resources may focus entirely on:

  • Brain science
  • Emotional regulation
  • Triggers
  • Habit patterns
  • Self-compassion
  • Practical recovery skills

You are welcome to use the tools that support your goals and beliefs.

OUR HOPE

What We Hope

Changes

We want people to feel able to talk about porn honestly without being humiliated.

We want people to understand urges before they become overwhelming.

We want recovery conversations to include brain science, emotional health, values, responsibility, and compassion.

We hope these resources help people:

  • Recognize emotional triggers
  • Understand how intensity affects the brain
  • Build healthier sources of relief
  • Set clearer boundaries
  • Recover constructively after setbacks
  • Ask for help sooner
  • Feel less isolated
  • Make choices that better reflect their values
  • Believe that change is still possible

ONE FRAMEWORK

The Ladder Is
One Tool

The Ladder Method can help you understand intensity and make more deliberate choices during an urge.

There is no single tool that works for every person in every situation. The goal is to give you one clear framework that can become part of a larger recovery plan.

Long-term recovery may also involve:

  • Therapy
  • Medical care
  • Spiritual guidance
  • Accountability
  • Support groups
  • Relationship repair
  • Emotional regulation
  • Healthier routines
  • Stronger boundaries
  • A deeper understanding of unmet needs
